NEW - Mulch Trial and Demonstration Sites

New grant funding this financial year from Wine Australia's regional program will see the establishment of a trial to measure the effects of woody mulch on water use efficiency of grapevines in the Clare Valley. The trial will be run at two sites - one in Auburn and the other at the Kirribilly vineyard on the Farrell Flat Road.  Soil moisture probes have been installed and monitoring has begun.  Mulch will be spread during September.  The first grower workshop will be held post-vintage to highlight the season's findings.

This latest trial builds on work carried out previously in the region.  In the early 1990s the Clare Valley Viticultural Landcare Group undertook a project on Soil Improvement and Moisture Retention in Clare Valley Vineyards.  It was one of the early studies in the region looking at the effects of straw mulch.
